PR News Analysis 1

Corey Lewandowski- Fired by Donald Trump, Hired by CNN
Within hours of Corey Lewandowski being fired as Donald Trump's Presidential Campaign Manager, he accepted a position as a Political Commentator for CNN. According to the New York Times, Lewandowski was let go after many requests both within and outside of the campaign party. Concerns about his ability to handle a national campaign against Hillary Clinton arose, as Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump noticed Lewandowski was "leaving tasks undone and leading a toxic work environment." Despite ethical concerns following multiple altercations between Lewandowski and various journalists, CNN claims to have hired him for the diversity he brings to politics in television. Given his experience running a historic presidential campaign, CNN feels he will bring valuable perspectives to the table and ensure "ideological diversity on air."

To run a functional campaign, the entire process must run like a well oiled machine. Firing campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski is sure to stir up a lot of chaos. Veteran Republican Operative, Kevin Madden told Associated Press "the campaign will have to show dramatic changes immediately on everything from fundraising and organizing, to candidate performance and discipline to show a correction has been made..." Having an unstable workforce within a presidential campaign raises many doubts and concerns in supporters and fuels the fire for opponents.

Five Front Runners and a Sleeper in talks for Clinton's Vice President
Five potential candidates remain at the top of Democrat Hillary Clinton's VP shortlist, as her search team continues to vet for their first choice. Washington Post ranked the five front runners from least likely to most promising starting with (5) Minnesota Senator, Amy Klobuchar. The Midwest is considered to be a central battleground of this election, so having her support will be a crucial advantage. (4) Ohio Senator, Sherrod Brown is also an appealing option for Vice President partially because he leads a swing state. In addition his liberal credentials fall in line with the campaign party. (3) Elizabeth Warren seems to be in the running as more of a PR stunt than anything else. Warren and Clinton are not known to have the best relationship, however having two women in power would guarantee change. (2) Julian Castro, former Mayor of San Antonio is a front runner because of his ability to bridge the generational age gap that Clinton lacks as well as possibly clinch the Hispanic voters bloc. (1) Virginia Senator, Tim Kaine is the foremost front runner in becoming Clinton's VP. Similar to Castro, Kaine represents a Spanish state and securing the votes he could bring in would almost secure a win for Clinton. According to CNN however, Tom Vilsack could be a potential "sleeper" in this search. Vilsack has been a substantial supporter of Clinton and would be a safe, non- controversial choice which would go hand in hand with Clinton's carefully calculated and cautious campaign.

Though Clinton's search team assures the media that there are many more candidates in the running for Vice President, their reasoning for expansion is more reliant on geography and demographics than anything else, according to NBC News. With the Democratic party vying to take control of the senate, acquiring the right numbers is going to be more important than acquiring sporadic numbers.

  1. Hi Taylor,
I also did my first post on the firing of Lewandowski, and found it to be interesting. I wondered why Trump didn't fire him sooner especially because he was accused of hashing it out with the media at a previous rally at a Trump campaign. My question is, why wasn't he fired sooner? What are your thoughts?
I found your second post interesting as well. I didn't see that in the news this week. I also agree with you that obtaining the correct numbers will be more beneficial in the long run than obtaining sporadic numbers. I don't know that having two women in charge will guarentee change, I think it really depends on who is srious about making the change and making the decisions that are best for our country.

    1. Hi Brittany, I was surprised that action was not taken sooner as well. I wonder if maybe because there was just so much going on, it was easier to brush the situation under the rug? I agree that it definitely depends on who is serious and will be the best choice for the country, I think the idea of having two women in power is a mindset for some more than anything.

  2. Hey Taylor,

Cute blog! Clinton's campaign is certainly newsworthy! I actually read this article as it was linked to a tweet from the Clinton campaign earlier this week. I would love to see Clinton choose Warren but I have heard in the past they haven't always gotten along. Either way, I'm sure the campaign will chose a qualified individual. Can't wait to hear more from you this semester. :)

  5. Taylor,

Great story choices. I must be living in a cave because I wasn't aware of Hillary even looking for anyone in regards to that. Everything was written very well. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Hi Taylor. I really enjoyed reading about the firing of Lewandowski. It is so interesting to hear about the behind the scene issues of the political world. I am curious to hear more on this topic and I am also curious to see how he does in his new position. The second article touches on such an interesting topic as well.. November will be such a pivotal time in history regardless who takes the office. And choosing whose name also makes the ticket is very crucial for each candidate.

    1. Hi Ali, I couldn't agree more. This election is going to go down in history regardless of who takes office and that was part of the reason I wanted to touch on each candidate. I think it is important our generation is informed about both candidates because we will have such a huge impact on society as we get older and get into the workforce.

  9. Without reading any more to this story since this happened,I wonder what the real issue was for him leaving. If a person creates a toxic work environment I would have certainly let that person go much sooner. If you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen and I'm sure there was and is, plenty of heat around Trump's campaign. I think CNN hired him because of his inside knowledge during his time with the Trump campaign. I don't anything about Lewandowski and his resume but seems to me if CNN didn't hire him another network certainly should.
